Gate Motor Not Opening: A Practical Diagnosis Guide

The most common cause of a gate that suddenly refuses to open is a tripped or misaligned safety beam. Photocells collect dust, spiders build webs across them, and windblown branches knock them out of alignment.

Wipe the lenses on both photocells with a soft cloth and check that the LED indicator (usually green when aligned) is showing on both units. If it's not, the beams are misaligned or one has failed.

If the LEDs on your control board are off entirely, the motor is starved of power. Check that the wall socket feeding the motor is on and hasn't tripped, and look for any blown fuses on the controller.

If mains and beams are fine, test the remote. If nothing happens, try a second remote. If both fail, the receiver has probably lost code — a technician can re-pair the remotes in minutes.

If the remote triggers a click on the board but the motor still doesn't move, the fault is downstream — usually the motor capacitor, the gearbox, or a mechanical bind.

A gate that hums but doesn't move tells you the electrics are fine but something mechanical is wrong. Common culprits: sheared pinion, seized gearbox, worn wheels that have flat-spotted, or the gate binding against something on the track.

If you've checked beams, power, remotes and heard the motor try to run — and it's still not moving — it's time to phone a technician. Continued attempts can damage the gearbox or the board.
